Our trip bus stopped in front of what appears like a cricket field. “We gonna play?” I mumbled. The eco-friendly field lie in front of Tudor-style buildings that somehow reminded me of Old England.

Malaysia was under British guideline before. It was only when I caught a peek of the flag pole in the southern end of the field that I realized that we were at the Dataran Merdeka (or self-reliance Square).

That flag pole is stated to be one of the tallest in the world, standing at 95 meters. On this flag pole, the Union Jack (flag of the United Kingdom) was lowered as well as the Malaysian flag was increased for the very first time. It was the midnight of August 31, 1957. That discusses the numerous Malaysian flags displayed in the vicinity. It was August when we went to Kuala Lumpur.

Today, the Merdeka Square is the location for the Merdeka Parade or the national Day Parade.

The Merdeka Square (Independence Square) as well as the Tudor-style buildings of the royal Selangor Club
The Merdeka Square is surrounded by a number of historical buildings. best across the street is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which boasts of stunning design that is so different from the extremely English buildings of royal Selangor Club. The Sultan Abdul Samad building was developed by A. C. Norman, influenced Indian Moghul design he saw in a few of his travels. The building of the building was completed in 1897. because then, it has housed numerous government offices including the Selangor specify Secretariat as well as the ultimate Court. Today, it is house to the Ministry of Information, communications as well as Culture.

We didn’t stay that long at the Merdeka Square. After only a few minutes of sightseeing as well as taking photos, our guide signaled that we ought to return to the bus as well as proceed to the next stop.
